Wrapup

Just as a final item, I would like to share some of my take-home lessons learned from the summer.

1. Don't apologize unnecessarily.

This one comes directly from Boss. I tend to do this all the time. One day she turned to me and said "Don't apologize. It was my fault. Unnecessary apologies put you at a subservient level to others. Do you ever see men apologize? NO. They simply arrive and say "I'm here, let's begin." "

2. Scientific research is nothing like CSI.

Tests never run exactly how you expect them to. Proteins, samples, and chemicals behave differently dependent on temperature, humidity (of all things), and countless other factors. Experiments often need to be re-run and perfected in order to achieve successful results. This can make for frustrating days, but the end results are completely worthwhile.

3. There are many paths to every career.

In one of my conversations with Boss, we discussed career options. I was surprised to learn that even the most specific field could be studied via many different educational routes. I have quite a bit of research to do in this department, in order to decide my ultimate goals.
